Ammattiliitto Pro: Authentication for new member platform
Ammattiliitto Pro was building a new digital platform for its members with support from an external development partner when Fortytwo was engaged to help with the authentication solution for the new member platform
About the company
Ammattiliitto Pro (Trade Union Pro) is one of Finland’s largest trade unions, with around 110,000 members across a wide range of sectors.
The challenge
Ammattiliitto Pro was working with a specialized member registry and integrations into Finland’s national identity verification infrastructure, which added technical complexity to the authentication project.
The original plan was to use an established authentication vendor, but as the project progressed, their plan became financially unviable, and the team was left without a clear way forward.
Lack of support and in-house expertise
Ammattiliitto Pro didn’t have deep in-house expertise in authentication, and support from existing partners was limited. They needed people who understood authentication, identity services, and the surrounding infrastructure well enough to make confident decisions, without building that expertise internally.
After being introduced to Fortytwo, the team at Ammattiliitto Pro engaged Fortytwo to assess the current situation and make recommendations on how to move forward.
Choosing the right technology
Harri Jaakkonen, Microsoft MVP and Head of Finland at Fortytwo, quickly came up with the idea of building Ammattiliitto Pro’s authentication solution around OpenID Connect, strong bank-based authentication, API integrations, and a dedicated, isolated custom authentication layer, selected to integrate smoothly with Finland’s national trust infrastructure and the union’s specialized registry.

Working through integration
The project began in January 2026, with Fortytwo’s specialists taking ownership of implementation while at the same time working closely with the customer’s own team and other external partners already involved in the platform project.
Weekly meetings, shared communication channels, and clear ownership kept everyone aligned, including the third-party developers building the wider platform.
Over time, the relationship expanded beyond authentication into cloud strategy, platform security, governance of the Azure and GitHub environments, and ongoing security auditing.

Measurable results
The authentication platform is being launched as beta in September 2026. According to Totti Brunila, getting the technology itself in place isn’t the only outcome that matters.
Ammattiliitto Pro has gained a working authentication platform that let the broader member platform move forward, access specialist expertise without building it internally, better visibility into security considerations and infrastructure improvements, and a structured way of working across multiple partners and stakeholders.
The relationship continues today, with ongoing security reviews of the organization’s GitHub and Azure environments.
